Like most of the cities located near a frontier, Nice had a long and eventful story.
~~
To make short, after the French Revolution, the city became french a first time in 1793, then it was separated from France and then , in 1860, the town became french definitively.
~~
So the monument of THE centenarian is celebrating TWO centenarians!..(1793-1893, and 1860-1960)
~~
But what I prefer in this kind of monument is less the event itself than the symbols that are used to illustrate it.
~~
On the top of the column, the greek goddess Nike, or Nikaia (which means "victory" in greek; from there comes the name of the town)
Nice is this young girl, who is coming in the arms of the older and bigger lady: this one is France ;She protects the younger one with her right arm, and the left arm is put on a bundle, which is the symbol for the republic.
~~
Behind the column, the Mediterranean Sea, my beloved blue fragment, whose symbol is a beautyful young women with voluptuous curves..
~~
A whole world of stone, feminine, immutable..
I like the idea of my town with faces of women, mild but firm, protector, serene, under the kindly eye of the founder goddess.
A maternal world, where it's good to live.
